need more elbow room

The Hand-Waver group doesn’t really have a lot of lab space. We share a medium-sized lab with Dr. J’s group, which has about 2/3 of the room (but, admittedly, more than a dozen grad students and much larger analytical instruments).

My first summer–the first time I was using the lab on a regular basis–I was Dr. Hand-Waver’s only remaning grad student. So the lab space I had access to was more than sufficient. In the fall of my second year, DannyBoy joined the group. But there was still more than enough bench space for the two of us. And that’s the way it’s been for the last, oh, year and a half.

But things are about to change. Beginning in a couple of months, a post-doc will be joining our group. In the fall, another post-doc will be joining our group as well. And also, at some point next year, there may be a third grad student signing up as well (assuming she doesn’t choose Dr. J’s group instead). That would make five people squashed into an area that really ought to accomodate four people.

I hope we all get along well, because we’re going to be in very close quarters.
